Paul Boateng (Badock Hall 1971 - 1972)
Paul, Lord Boateng (LLB 1973, Honorary LLD 2007) was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Brent South from 1987 to 2005, In May 2002, he was appointed as Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Following his departure from the House of Commons, he served as the British High Commissioner to South Africa from March 2005 to May 2009. He was introduced as a member of the House of Lords on 1 July 2010.
Sir Stephen Laws (Badock Hall 1969 - 1970)
Sir Stephen Laws (LLB 1972, Honorary LLD 2012) joined the Civil Service as a legal assistant in the Home Office and transferred in 1976 to the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel (“OPC”). For 30 years his main work was as a drafter of legislation. In 2006, he became the First Parliamentary Counsel, the Permanent Secretary responsible for leading the OPC, with a particular role advising on constitutional matters. He was also responsible for the civil servants supporting the Leaders and Whips in both Houses. He retired from the Civil Service in January 2012.
Mary Prior (Pro Chancellor of the University)
Mary Prior CVO MBE DStJ JP was appointed Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant of the City and County of Bristol in 2007. Since her appointment she has become Patron or President of over thirty different charities and organisations and now chairs the Commission for Bristol and Avon Magistrates. Mary is a Pro Chancellor of the University.
